Rex Specs Ear Pro by Zeteo Tech was specifically developed to protect military working dogs from temporary and permanent hearing damage that can result from loud noise.

Whether the dog is on a mission, at a shooting range, on a motorcycle, or at an AC/DC concert — Rex Specs Ear Pro protects their ears and can reduce hearing damage over time.

Rex Specs Ear Pro Performance

We have adopted best practices from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to conduct real-ear tests on dogs to assess the effectiveness of Rex Specs Ear Pro. These tests were performed at low frequencies, as they are the most challenging to attenuate.

Tests were conducted in a sound-insulated chamber where the noise level was set to 95 dB A (white noise). Examples of 95 dB A sounds: tractor, blender, motorcycle, power tools, Bell UH-1 helicopter.

See the graph below for results.
At very low frequencies (20Hz – 120Hz), Rex Specs Ear Pro reduces noise by 18 dB A to 24 dB A. As the frequency increases, so does the product's effectiveness.

Why Your Dog Needs Hearing Protection

Rex Specs Ear Pro and Hearing Protection for Dogs

Rex Specs Ear Pro, developed by Zeteo Tech, was specifically designed to protect military working dogs from temporary or permanent hearing damage due to noise pollution.
Whether the dog is on a mission, at a training ground, on a motorcycle, or at an AC/DC concert – Ear Pro protects their ears and can reduce the risk of hearing damage over time.

What is Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)?

Prolonged noise within the frequency range that dogs can hear can cause the tiny sensory hairs in the inner ear (stereocilia) to become fatigued and stop working – causing the brain to receive no auditory messages from the ear. This is called noise-induced hearing loss or Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL).

Which Dogs Are at Risk?

Especially working dogs such as police, search and rescue, service, and hunting dogs who are exposed to significant noise daily. But also household dogs in noisy situations.

Why Does a Dog's Hearing Matter?

Hearing is crucial for the safety of both the dog and its owner. The dog needs to be able to receive commands and perceive its surroundings. If a dog loses its hearing, its ability to react correctly is impaired – which can create danger.

Examples of Causes of NIHL in Dogs:

    \
  • \

Flight and transport in noisy vehicles (helicopters, trucks)

    \
  • \
  • \

    Repeated gunfire (hunting, training)

    \
  • \
  • \

Noise at home or near construction sites

    \
  • \
  • \

Dogs kept in noisy kennels or shelters

    \
  • \
\

How Do We Test if a Dog Has NIHL?

We use a BAER test – which is a physiological measurement of the hearing threshold of each ear. In older dogs, we use different sound intensities and observe where brainwaves stop responding – then we know at what intensity the dog no longer hears.

What are the Symptoms of NIHL?

    \
  • \

The dog does not respond to commands as well

    \
  • \
  • \

They seem confused or cannot pinpoint where a sound is coming from

    \
  • \
  • \

Cannot perform their role as a working dog

    \
  • \
  • \

Requires changes in behavior and training

    \
  • \
\

How Does Hearing Protection for Dogs Work?

Ear Pro works similarly to headphones for humans. It is made of a stretchy material and sound-insulating foam that creates a good seal around the dog's ears. The goal is to attenuate the noise and reduce fatigue in the stereocilia, thereby reducing the risk of NIHL.

Why Were These Devices Developed for the Military and Working Dogs?

    \
  • \

    Intense training in noisy environments

    \
  • \
  • \

Noise in large kennels (100+ dogs)

    \
  • \
  • \

Shooting exercises and transport by helicopters or planes

    \
  • \
  • \

All these factors reduce the dog's ability to work and maintain good hearing

    \
  • \
\

Why Does This Matter for Owners and Teammates?

Police, SWAT, and military personnel rely on the dog to perform its job safely. They need its clear hearing – both to ensure the dog's safety and their own.

In Which Situations Should Household Dogs Also Use Ear Pro?

    \
  • \

Hunting – due to repeated gunfire

    \
  • \
  • \

Transport in noisy vehicles (planes, cars, etc.)

    \
  • \
  • \

    Concerts or nearby construction sites

    \
  • \
  • \

    Festivals with fireworks, parades, etc.
